Często zadawane pytania

Is travel insurance mandatory?

In the EU/EFTA it is not mandatory — you have the EHIC card. However, the EHIC only covers basic treatment in the public health system. For many countries outside the EU (e.g. USA, Thailand) insurance is effectively essential due to medical costs that can run into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

How much does travel insurance cost?

A basic policy costs between 2 and 5 PLN per day, depending on the destination and scope of cover. A week's trip to Europe costs approximately 20–40 PLN. Travel to the USA/Asia is more expensive — approximately 50–100 PLN per week.

What sum insured should I choose for a trip abroad?

For Europe, 30,000–60,000 EUR in medical costs is sufficient. For the USA, Canada and Japan a minimum of 100,000–200,000 EUR is needed — medical costs in these countries are extremely high. A visit to an emergency room in the USA can cost 5,000–10,000 USD.

Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?

Most policies in 2026 cover treatment of COVID-19 as an infectious disease. However, check whether the policy also covers quarantine (additional accommodation, ticket changes). Not all companies include quarantine costs.

Are extreme sports covered by insurance?

A standard policy usually does not cover extreme sports (skiing, diving, climbing). You need to add an extension — the cost is an additional 30–50% of the premium. Signal Iduna stands out for its broad sports package at the standard price.
