Types of Life Insurance
Term — cover for a fixed period (e.g. 10, 20 or 30 years). The cheapest form of life insurance. The benefit is paid only if death occurs during the insurance period.
Whole-of-life — cover for the rest of your life. More expensive, but guarantees payment of the benefit. Part of the premium builds a surrender value.
Investment-linked (unit-linked) — combines cover with investing. Part of the premium is invested in funds. Higher potential return, but also risk of losing value.
Group — offered by employers. Cheaper than individual policies, but with a lower sum insured and limited scope of cover.
What to Pay Attention To?
Sum insured — should be sufficient to support the family for 3–5 years and repay any loans.
Scope of cover — check whether the policy covers critical illness, personal accident (NNW) and hospitalisation.
Exclusions — read the General Terms and Conditions to know in what situations the benefit will not be paid.
Waiting period — a period (usually 3–6 months) during which cover is limited. Does not apply to death caused by an accident.
